Garrion: So what is your idea for THS? I think you said in past something about infomorph?

Taragnor: Well I had a couple.

Taragnor: Not sure if they’ll fit since like I said I don’t know the setting well.

Taragnor: But like we could jsut do Shadowruns basically but in THS instead of Shadowrun.

Taragnor: But the same basic deal of being off the book criminals doing various raids on corporations and such.

Garrion: Infomorph is probaly my most uncomfortable area. I was thinking of setting it in the 4th Wave where that tech is in the cutting edge but not common.

Taragnor: heh, I don’t really know the setting well so can’t really advise you when/where to set it. I more just have general ideas of what the PCs are basically.

Garrion: I was wanting to ground it more in the physical realm with actual people and bio-mods.

Garrion: If the infomorph character was simply in a physical shell then that is reasonable but to have a digital being roaming the networks would be hell to run.

Taragnor: heh. Yeah. I don’t know how the hacking rules are in GURPS, if they’re anything like Shadowruns, it’d be a total nightmare lol.

Taragnor: Since like… one deal with Shadowrun everyone always says is not to have a hacker in the party, since hacking was like super complex and basically its own adventure unto itself that the other PCs can’t take part in.

Taragnor: PLus the whole deeal of like.. if the hacker fails, generally it’s a total mission fail.

Taragnor: Of course, I’m not sure if the GURPS mechanics are easier/harder when it comes to hacking into stuff.

Garrion: I’m not aware of any hard fast “hacking rules”. I think shadow run has its own mechanic for that since it is a large concept of the game system. As far as I’m aware hacking would just be using your skills and whatever series of “gates” or challenges the GM set up.

Taragnor: Yeah, I figured THS would have some hacking rules, I dunno though, like I said, I’m not familiar with the setting at all. I’ve just heard it’s somewhat cyberpunk.

Taragnor: So most of my ideas for it entail pretty much something you’d fit inot the SR setting, since that’s a setting I know. heh.

Taragnor: And I figure it’s kinda similar at least.

Garrion: Somewhat, but not the focus. Like you have acknowledged it is more of a setting concept…. I’ll post the quick synopsis….

Taragnor: Yeah, I mean I’m not really sure what kinda stuff is traditional to focus on in a THS game.

Taragnor: I figured the basic shadowrun style adventure would probably be prettyy doable though in any kind of future setting.

Taragnor: Where eit’s just like “Steal X from corporation Y” And you gotta plan a break-in of some kind.

Garrion: well i was really going to do something different than the corporate espionage thing.. at least at first. The things you find out could lead you into that sort of mission.

Taragnor: heh yeah, I mean you asked for ideas so I’m giving you some.

Garrion: I have been developing a story line where you are all crew members on a colonization vessel. You have no defined career focus needed other than sonething a new upstart colony would need.

Garrion: You wake from your cryochambers as the story begins.

Garrion: That is really all i can tell you for now, only that it entails a little survival, some mystery with detective work, both physical and digital,, some tension and suspense….

Taragnor: Yeah mystery is cool, I like the detective stuff. One of the other ideas I was gonna suggest was like pretty much like the video game LA Noire, only in space. heh.

Taragnor: where we’re basically detectives/police, and have to solve crimes, get in shoot-outs, etc.

Garrion: You will have many challenges but “combat” is not a planned focus, at least not at first. You may find a need to fight something as the story progresses.

Garrion: Yeah, something like that would work, it would be like Blade Runner.

Taragnor: heh, yeah that’s cool. I mean, I dont’ mind some combat, but I like there to be a mix of other stuff.

Sachi: Whoaaaaa, I have a lotta CP to spend

Garrion: I’m working on how to transition the beginning plot into something involving intrigue and corporate involvement, may be use that to transition into missions against the corp.

Sachi: Ooooooo

Taragnor: Yeah, I mean I like the idea for combat missions to have it where the enemy force is superior to ours and we gotta win through good planning/strategy/recon/etc. Those are the combat stuff I find the most interesting.

Taragnor: One thing I kinda like about sci-fi settings is that like floorplans and stuff are generally fairly easy to come by (at least partial floorplans anyway).

Taragnor: So you can get some planning going as far as how you want to do the operation.

Taragnor: So it’s not quite like a fantasy dungeon crawl where every place you go, you’re basically going in with nothing but the most basic information.

Garrion: I also want the players to be an active element in plot advancement. There is actually a GURPS rule for this but it entails using CP to fuel player driven plot developments. There may be some reluctance to spend precious CP on plot aspects rather than ability advancement, but if it carries with it a concrete inclusion of that plot element and a player really wants it they would be willing.

Taragnor: Yeah I mean I dunno if I like the whole spending CP for stuff exactly, since it’s kinda like one of those things you’re really reluctant to do. Why not just use something similar to the plot cards you used for PF?

Taragnor: Those were fun.

Sachi: Yeah, that was a neat idea

Taragnor: Maybe allow people to spend points during the mission or something spontaneously on a permanent ability as a sort of plot modifier. Like you coudl say buy a new contact that you happened to need/want for the mission at hand.

Garrion: Yeah, we could incorporate something like that. It just seemed that they never really got used for that porpose and just the easy mechanical advantage was used.

Taragnor: well I eman you could just not have them have mechanical advantages at all.

Taragnor: That’s probably the easiest way. So people aren’t tempted to spend em on mechanical stuff. I mean you’ll prolly run into more trouble using CP for that anyway.

Taragnor: Since like everyone is gonna wanna bank their CP for abilities.

Taragnor: You may also wanna set some caps on how many points someone can put towards a single skill in the THS game too, so you don’t run into a bunch of Zindal characters lol, that are just pure combat experts.

Garrion: Yeah, that is the worry why it would not work very well. I think you have to have the right group that is very proactive in developing the plot and world together.

Garrion: i will definately do that. notice I said I wanted a more Realistic/gritty game.. that menas no insane skill levels.

Taragnor: yeah well it’s tough if you just run modules since a lotof the module plots are just pretty much on rails for the most part, so it kinda precludes anyone from really having huge effects on the plot or world in general.

Garrion: Bio-mods can allow superhuman things, but you have to pay a ton for them, IF they are available.

Taragnor: yeah I mean you wanna allow some of the future tech that’s part of the fun of playing in a sci-fi setting.

Garrion: Well this will not be a mod at all…. completely free form. I know a REAL GM would cal me a lame-o but I tend to use mods cause they are easy.

Taragnor: Yeah just saying that the modules kinda take away a lot of PC feeling of being able to change the world and such.

Garrion: Well I’ll preface this camp in the fact that PCs are not world changers. They are meerly trying to survive in it and maybe make a small area of influence better.

Garrion: You are the small fish in the vast expanse corporate and social upheaval floating through space.

Garrion: As they gain influence and skill they can attempt to change larger spheres of influence, but it is a slow process that could take a lifetime.

Taragnor: heh hopefully that’sa lifetime of in-game time and not real time.

Garrion: haha, yeah

Taragnor: I mean, I wouldn’t mind having some time jumps and such between events. Doesn’t have to be that sorta D&Dish thing where you’re constantly adventuring pretty much 24/7.

Sachi: Hehehe

Taragnor: Gives you some time to do stuff during towntime and what not.

Garrion: I kinda envision this as a mix of Deux Ex, Blade Runner, Prometheus/Interstellar, Outland, 2001/2010 Space Odessy, etc

Sachi: Hmmmm, I could boost my magery up to 6 and take 2 levels off my Air-only magery to keep it the same, that’d only get me to 19 on my non-VH spells T_T But after I get enough for one more I could at least boost it up to 20…

Garrion: Sachi, did you see my FATE character concept? I have no idea how to start on it with the Aspects but I’m working on it.

Garrion: My character idea is something along the lines of Hiro Nakamura. He is a RPG geek who is a bit socially inept, gullible and naïve. He discovers he is a “master” of space and time. Master is used lightly though, in reality at this point he doesn’t have a lot of control over it.

Sachi: Oooo awesome~

Sachi: He’s one of my favorite characters from Heroes :3 (I only saw like the first 2 seasons)

Urso: no iterally… it just make really no sense to me… like are no rules at all that I can see

Taragnor: oh heh.

Taragnor: Yeah it’s a lot rules liter than GURPS or D&D.

Garrion: that because it is narative instead of mechanics based Ced.. I’m having a bit of trouble with it too.

Urso: and yes to the pdf G… might be better to look at that way

Taragnor: Fate is more about narrative stuff and DM judgment.

Garrion: one sec and I’ll xfer to you

Sachi: Yeah, it’s super narrative-y. It’s not so much about defining what exactly you can do as it is about facilitating cool stuff

Urso: btw, I have DnD 5E players book if anyone wants it

Garrion: Assuming we usin Core and not Accelerated?

Taragnor: yeah pretty sure Sachi is using core. I mean they’re both kinda similar anyway.

Taragnor: Mostly just core is a little bit more rules heavy about the skills

Taragnor: where Accelerated just has these things called approaches which are even more vague basically.

Garrion: and assume the Toolkit is mostly for GMs or anything in there I could use too?

Taragnor: It’s mostly a GM thing, though Sachi may use some of the rules in there. I mean it’s mostly kinda mods you do for the game. Though it’s got some magic systeems and what not.

Taragnor: I wouldn’t really worry too much about that till you understand the basics though.

Garrion: Sending you the toolkit to Ced in case you need it later.

Taragnor: I mean the hardest part in Fate I think is the stunts and extras (which could get tricky for a supers game)

Taragnor: Aspects and skills are pretty easy.

Sachi: Yeah, don’t mess with the toolkit much, it’s more like if I decide to use anything from it I’ll point you there

Garrion: That is where I’m having trouble.. would “Time Stop” be an aspect or a Stunt?

Sachi: Any changes I make are gonna be adding stuff on to the characters, like extras you can buy or like a system to buy powers with stunts

Sachi: (I’m not 100% sure yet, I gotta spend some time and read it)

Garrion: Just curious, have any of you ever tied or do you use RealmWorks?

Garrion: It is a campaign plotting/planning software by same people who make Hero Lab if not familiar.

Taragnor: ah never even heard of it actually

Taragnor: What kinda stuff does it do?

Sachi: Also if it’s a specific power it’d be a stunt, but it might be more like you’d have an aspect that lets you control time, and that’d let you accomplish certain uses of your skills and other stunts by stopping time. If I understand it correctly ^^;; Also I never heard of RealmWorks either

Garrion: It is pretty complex. I really don;t even know how to fully utilize it.

Garrion: Lots of depth and ability though. If you are the type who wants to take the time to plot everything and not just run by scrap notes and seat of pants.

Taragnor: I mean kinda depends on what game system I’m running too

Garrion: i think most people do. You would have to really want to devote a lot of time and effort to developing everything and show all the connecting links.

Taragnor: Yeah, I mean I find obsidian portal kinda works good for that stuff anyway.

Garrion: But that is the one thing that the program does easily. It constantly searches for related content and automatically links it together as related content.

Taragnor: with the wiki and stuff.

Garrion: yes, OP does what we need it to do nicely.

Garrion: I guess you can post your camp to the wb in “player view” but that is an extra service which i would refuce to pay a annual fee for. Otherwise it would be good for local group as you could run the whole camp right from your plans on the screen.

Taragnor: Yeah honestly like.. msot of the VTT stuff I’ve seen is kinda inferior to Maptool.

Taragnor: Like it doens’t really warrant paying anything IMO when you can use maptool for free and it’s generally better and more versatile

Taragnor: Yeah I mean mostly it’s just we did so much Fantasy dungeon crawl stuff, and that doesn’t really seem to be GURPS strong point honestly. Like it doens’t really seem to function all that well as a pure combat system.

Tristan: I know you were talking about a apocolypic setting at one point too. I personally think an alternate worlds thing would be cool, that way it’s always variety. Goes well with transhuman space as well (sense there are multipole worlds).

Garrion: no, not as fantastacal… no alien races, no galactic councils, it is “hard sci-fi” meaning more like Blade Runner, Space Odessey, Outland, etc

Tristan: so when you go into space, you run into other humans?

Garrion: Yes, there are corps and nations trying to take over resources in the solar system

Sachi: Yeah, Blade Runner is a pretty good thing to compare it to (I was trying to think of stuff)

Taragnor: heh… I mean it’d be weird to have a strong sex drive without any actual sex organs. Unless you got some sexual co-processor or something in your hardware.

Garrion: I was telling Taragnor that the whole Infomorph thing is my least comfortable aspect of THS.

Sachi: Present day, but you could have super science like in a comic book (maybe you’re just really smart or you know a smart guy or you’re from the future or another dimension)

Taragnor: Yeah, it’s basically present day earth, more or less, but I mean, like any comic book world it’s gonna have its share of Iron Mans, Doctor Dooms, etc. with a bunch fo advnaced tech.

Garrion: To the north on an upraised stage, gold, green, and magenta mosaic tiles form an intricate glyph on the floor of this halfcircle chamber of a road vanishing into the horizon. The battered and blasted remains of a stone statue that may have once depicted a human adventurer lie scattered throughout the lower southern half of the room.

Loryc: “So that leaves the usual vague directions. It’d be nice to once run into the ghost of an architect to question.”

Mina: “Would it still be a secret then?”

Loryc: “Well not after I tell you about it.”

Garrion: This room is brightly lit by numerous glowing crystalline lanterns hanging from the ceiling. A large summoning circle of inlaid silver and cold iron sits in the center of the room. To the south, a massive door of red metal, decorated with a devil’s head, bars passage beyond the south wall. Strange runes decorate the door’s border. To the northeast, a large desk carved from a giant block of red stone rests in the corner of the room.

Loryc: “Ah the red door, this is where the password is used.”

Mina: “Definately for summoning fiends and such. Look, both silver and cold iron.”

Urso: " red door, guess we right place"

Mina: “Utilitarian, gotta give em that.”

Mina: “Though why would the Pathfinders be summoning demons or devils?”

Loryc: “Yeah, that’s a very large summonig circle.”

Mina: “Maybe it’s a prison circle instead and something got loose or is hidden from our eyes still in there?”

  • Urso gives the circle a wide berth and moves toward the red door.

Loryc: “Well I know it’s killing you guys wondering what’ll happen if someone walks inside it… so…”

Garrion: The runes on the door’s face match the tiny runes carved into the desk—both are letters from the Azlanti alphabet

Loryc: “They’re generally not this big…”

Mina: “Yeah, sure I guess, but yeah that plus the Pathfinders supposedly are the enemies of House Thrune.”

Loryc: “Ah… so we need to use these letters to spell the password.”

Tristan: “yeah, this thing is huge”

Garrion: well not all over the city, but they would be found in select places by devil summoners

Mina: “Unless they’re just a bunch of hypocrites or have been compromised, or something, I dunno.”

Loryc: “Well there is other stuff you can summon other than devils. Ther’es a lot of planes out there.”

Garrion: so I’m sure you don;t know azlanti, so you will need a spell or a linguistics check

Garrion: This flight of stairs winds downward into a darkness that is periodically shattered by the erratic flashing of a bright but distant light.

Mina: normally tab just stabs everything in the eye in the first two rounds, so we dont get to experiment much

Urso: for tthis camp might be ok, since seems most our enemies are bipeds… don’t know how will would work vs monsters though

Melty: (Yeah, I think somewhere the book discourages super high skill mods in favor of taking techniques and other stuff like that)
